Should I Get Liposuction Through The Dry Technique?
Liposuction is a large and continually growing field
. Every year hundreds of thousands of Americans undergo the procedure. Liposuction (also called lipoplasty and suction lipectomy) is one of the very most popular of cosmetic surgeries. For twelve out of the last thirteen years, it has topped the charts as the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery in America. It is similarly popular in other areas around the world, such as Europe, South America and parts of Asia.
Liposuction means literally the suction of fat. The procedure uses tiny hollow needles called cannulas to break up and suction fat from a specific target area in the patient's body. However, there are a large variety of methods of performing a liposuction, and these different techniques vary greatly in their safety, in their results and in the way they are employed.
The "dry technique" was one of the very earliest of lipoplasty techniques developed. It was first developed during the 1907's, but has since been largely discontinued, due to safety concerns.
The dry technique receives its name because it uses no additional fluids during the surgery. The liposuction methods that replaced the dry technique used large amounts of liquids to help make the removal of fat easier.
Because of this, the dry method involves a lot more tissue damage than modern methods. For example, the tumescent technique (which is the most commonly performed variety of liposuction) injects large amounts of fluid into the target area in order to make the fatty tissue firm and swollen, which makes it easier for the doctor to exercise fine control and avoid damaging muscle and skin tissue. The tumescent fluid also contains medications which reduces the amount of blood lost during surgery.
In contrast, under the dry method, the surgeon has to break up the fat entirely by force of hand, which frequently leads to greater trauma and to unpleasing blemishes or denting of the skin.
One of the greatest complications associated with the dry method is the large amount of blood loss it tends to cause. Some
Lipoplasty performed with the dry technique is always performed under general anesthesia. Some estimates suggest that blood comprised up to 30% of the tissue removed during surgery.
Thankfully, this technique has been replaced by much safer methods. Modern techniques such as the tumescent method, laser lipolysis, custom acoustic liposuction and the water jet method are much safer. They typically involve little blood loss and can be performed under local anesthesia.
Occasionally some doctors suggest using the dry method in patients who have a history of heart problems, because they don't want to risk getting fluid in the lungs. However, in the vast majority of cases the dry method is something that should be left in the past.
