Should You Be Using Electric Or Manual Down-riggers?
Most fishermen will be used to trolling baits on the water's surface
. They will do this and expect to have a good day's fishing without realizing that they are doing it all wrong. In order to have the most success, you also need to troll baits in the water column and this is what downriggers are used for.
What works on the surface may not work once you get into deep water due to the changing temperature of the water the deeper it gets. In addition to all the other choices when it comes to downriggers, you also need to choose between electric and manual. The following article will show you some of the pros and cons of each.
As you might expect, electric downriggers are the choice of serious fishermen. Their biggest con is the fact that they are out of the price range of casual anglers.
Unless you can afford such an expensive hobby or else you are fishing for commercial purposes this is not the choice for you. Also, if you are fishing in shallow waters of 70 feet or less, electric downriggers are not necessary.
What they do provide however is convenience, power and comfort. You can control the cable and weight by merely flicking a switch and they are easy to operate. Once you get into deep waters you will not want to fish with anything else as they can plumb the depths of the lake or ocean you are in with rapid speed.
If you're aiming to run several downriggers off your boat then you simply must have the electric edition. The more advanced versions can be plugged into sonar units which causes the rigger to stop automatically once the weight hits the surface.
Manual downriggers are a waste of time for anyone who owns a large boat and aims to do large amounts of fishing. If you are trolling in deep water, controlling the rigger manually can be an arduous and tiring job that requires a bit of muscle. Also, there is no possibility of operating a number of downriggers simultaneously on a manual rigger like on its electric counterpart.
While it may not be much use for commercial fishing, it is certainly the friend of those who just enjoy casting their line as a hobby. At the end of the day, manual downriggers will still get the job done, just not as efficiently as the electric models.
If you are operating a small boat, you are unlikely to ever be operating in deep lakes so taking a long time to operate the rigger is not something that needs to be worried about. Finally, manual downriggers are far cheaper than electric ones so those who are on a budget really have no choice in the matter.
If you can afford to go electric then do so. Electric downriggers offer superb control and completely eliminate the fatigue factor that can set in when having to operate the rigger for long periods. Yet if you're only interested in casual fishing the manual rigger is your only choice due to its affordability.
