Should You Go To Nursing School?
Many people who think about becoming a nurse wonder if they're the type of person who should be a nurse
. Do they have the intelligence, the personality and the commitment to enter and succeed in a challenging and rewarding profession such as nursing?
Below are some questions to ask yourself as you consider applying to nursing school.
Do you enjoy being around people, even when they're not at their best? Nurses deal with a considerable number of sick people, of course. Many patients are in pain and aren't "fun" to be around when they're not feeling well.
Are you good at following directions and procedures? Nurses must know the procedures for taking care of patients with certain illnesses or injuries, yet they also must deal with a hospital's or health care facility's rules and regulations. Nurses must document everything they do for a patient. Are you detailed oriented? Can you multi-task, function under stress and be self-directed.
Have you spoken to working nurses? Have you watched nurses at work in different settings? Have you volunteered in a hospital? In other words, do you have a real idea of what a nurse does? Have you seen the long hours and the hard physical work a nurse puts in each day on the job? Have you ever been around sick or dying people for any length of time? If not, it is recommended that you gain some volunteer experience to explore the professional role of a nurse.
In school, did you do well in the sciences? You don't need to be an ace in science, biology, chemistry, etc., but you must be comfortable with these subjects and able to study them successfully. Can you study long hours after school? How do you do writing papers? How are you at taking exams?
Possibly one of the most important questions you should answer about yourself is the why: why are you thinking about becoming a nurse? Is it because many people have told you they think you would do well in the profession? Are other family members nurses and it's just been "assumed" you will be one, as well? If you decide to become a nurse, it's one of the most demanding and challenging (yet rewarding) professions available. Yet it must be your decision, not your mother's, not your wife's, not your school's guidance counselor's. You needn't be a type of person who's always dreamed of nursing to succeed in the profession. But it should be what YOU want, for the goals and plans YOU hold for your life, not someone else's. Your nursing career, as well as your life, has a greater chance of success that way.
