Should you use blu ray discs?
First it was VHS vs Beta Max then it was Video CD vs DVD and recently it was HD DVD squaring up with Blu Ray for domination of the home video market so should you get blu ray?
The last 30 years has seen different video formats duke it out to become a household name and with BluRay winning over HD DVD new figures have suggested that Blu ray is here to stay taking over from DVDs.
The projected figures which have been released by the Japan Recording - Media Industries Association (JRIA) suggest the sales of CD-R and DVD are in decline. CD-Rs sold 5,131 million units in 2009 this is expected to drop to 3,125 million in 2012, DVDs don't fare much better shifting 5,271 million in 2009 it is estimated that this will fall to 4,372 million in 2012.
The JRIA is predicting that Blu ray rental and sales will step in to plug the gap left by dwindling DVD and CD-R sales, its projected figures suggest that by 2012 BluRay will sell around 310 million units, a massive improvement on the 44 million units sold in 2009.
News that a Humphrey Bogart film collection and the Back to Future trilogy are coming to BluRay shows that the film studios are getting on board with Blu ray discs as well as the usual DVD rental and sales.
The news that Marty McFly and the Doc are coming to BluRay will be well received by plenty of film fans, not only will fans finally be able to watch the Delorian in HD but the higher capacity discs will also allow massive amounts of extra content.
Already confirmed to be included in the box set will be a six part retrospective documentary, film commentaries, deleted scenes and a storyboarded alternate ending.
If you prefer classics from the golden age of cinema then the Humphrey Bogart collection being released by Warner Bros is for you. The collection will feature 24 films spread over 12 BluRay discs will also include a photo book, 15 photo cards as well as additional archived studio correspondence.
Whilst Blu ray looks like its set to grow and grow in the next few years there is already potential competition waiting.
News of higher capacity Blu ray discs holding up 128GB nearly three times as much as current Blu ray discs has got Sony interested suggesting that they would be ideal for those wanting to record and playback HD content.
Blu ray is defiantly on the up and up but unfortunately the price is still at a premium meaning that many are opting to rent rather than own Blu ray films.
This is not uncommon with new technology, so expect the price of high definition movies to drop dramatically in the next year or so. Blu ray is also cheaper to rent than buy using services such as Lovefilm.
