You will notice when taking pictures with your digital camera is that there is a delay between the time you press the shutter button to the time the camera will actually register the shot. In most situations this delay is small enough that it may not be noticeable due to that most digital camera these days have a much faster shutter speed than before. But if you are going to capture moving objects such as a baby in action, or a couple dancing, and the like, this shutter delay may result to a blur photo of the subject.

To understand more about shutter delay it is defined as the time gap between pressing the shutter button to the camera. Although shutter delay only happens with digital cameras since it is connected to a built-in micro computer and holding down the shutter button initiates a series of events that will result in capturing a photo. A traditional camera on the other hand, does not have any shutter delay since it is virtually connected to the shutter itself and holding down the button will immediately result in capturing the actual shot.

When you press the shutter button of a digital camera, it goes through a series of setup events in order to get all its electronics ready. The camera will be able to capture the shot only after it is finished processing its needed electronic setup. The process time may vary depending on the type of digital camera, but for most it is usually around one second or so. When you take subsequent photos there is an additional delay that is made by the camera compressing the photo and putting it slowly to flash memory.

It may seem that a one second delay does not look like a long time between capturing an action to actually missing it. Although when a camera initiate a focus process when the shutter process is held down and will only take the photo when the focus is completed, the shutter delay may even become longer.

Another delay that is made by the digital camera technology is the Initial Delay. This is when the camera is not used for a certain period while it is turned on and will enter into a standby mode. This time can also vary, but it usually occurs after a couple of minutes. When the camera goes into standby mode it turns off so that it can save its electronic power. When the shutter button is pressed, the camera will restart, but it will take a few seconds to process. The result is a longer delay with the shutter button is pressed when a shot is taken since the camera has been idle for a while. In order to avoid this, better make sure that the camera is turned off and does not go to standby mode. You may also disable the automatic standby feature through the menu option of your camera.

When it comes to the automatic focus, to minimize the shutter delay of your digital camera is to hold the shutter button half way down. The result for most cameras will be a one-time focus process and then a focus lock. The camera will already be in focus and when the shutter is already fully pressed it will take the shot without the need to re-focus.
