Fort Macon State Park: This rugged fort sits on an island off the North Carolina coast. While visitors appreciate the wonderful surrounding land, the fort itself is of particular interest. Cape Lookout National Seashore: Another beautiful location off the beaten path is Cape Lookout. Reachable only by boat, Cape Lookout is a series of pristine islands three miles off the Crystal Coast. These islands contain national historical treasures such as the 150 year old lighthouse. Camping and hiking are popular in Cape Lookout.
