It was in November of 1986 that this particular coin was released to the public weighing roughly 31 grams, and with dimensions of almost 3 millimeters in thickness and 40.6 millimeters in diameter.

The silver eagle coins have two faces which are referred to as the revers and the obverse sides, or as we commonly know as, the tail and the head. Of the mints in the US, only three actually create the American silver eagle coin, namely, the mints in San Francisco, Philadelphia, and West Point.

The head of the eagle coin features the Walking Liberty which was created by Adolph Weinman in early 1916 and which remains to be a very popular design to day since it is still used in the silver coins that are minted at the present time. The tail of the coin, on the other hand, features the heraldic eagle which also contains the 13 stars which was conceptualized in 1986 by John Mercanti. The contemporary design on the silver coin of today is a variation of the US Seal.

When the first silver American eagle coin was made or "struck" in 1986, the former Secretary of the Treasury, James Baker attended the ceremonies. With the silver coin as legal tender, today's coins that are made in West Point are specially made to prevent any mint marks from being present on the bullion coins.

For serious coin collectors, there is also proof that silver coins contain the letter that stands for the mint where they were made. A proof coin with an "S" mark was minted in the San Francisco mint, while a coin marked with a "P" were made in Philadelphia. Coins stamped with a "W" are proofs that came out of the West Point Mint.

As a means to hedge against inflation because of the current economic crisis, silver eagle coins are in high demand such that rationing was implemented on a weekly basis. Today, distribution of silver coin takes place within an allocation program.
