When my brother first took home his girlfriend, now his wife, she began to notice that as they got nearer to their destination everyone they met coming in the opposite direction seemed to wave and smile. After awhile she asked my brother if he knew all these people.

Ah no he said everyone waves and smiles to each other around here. She had a great first impression of his hometown and even mentioned it in her wedding speech.

A smile costs us nothing, its value is in the giving. It says I am glad to meet you, I am interested in you. When we smile the benefits are many. We feel good about ourselves. Anyone we meet feels better. If you are smiling it is very hard to feel bad. It can actually alter our mood. It can even alter the look of our face - remember the two ugly sisters in Cinderella!!

As Dale Carnegie says in his book, How To Win Friends and Influence People, "you must have a good time meeting people if you expect them to have a good time meeting you".

Babies usually wake up in the morning with a smile on their face, mine did anyway. It was a great start to the day. I still keep up the routine of greeting them with a smile and a hug every morning. I use it to get them and me off to a good start for the day.

If you do not feel like smiling you got to force yourself to do it. Think of something good that has happened to you in the past. You will usually find that your mood will change. Happiness can be got by controlling your thoughts. It is how we look at a situation that makes us happy or sad. As Shakespeare said, "there is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so".

The world seem to have forgotten the value of a smile, we are all too busy getting on with our own lives to connect with others. Let us bring back the smile. Let us all start from now to smile at all we meet, hopefully most will smile back at us.
