Single Panes Are The Single Biggest Pain About Windows

Single pane windows suck energy like a tornado sucks mobile homes--they're a vortex that consumes relentlessly

.

Maybe that's a little exaggeration, but there's no question you should replace your old single-pane windows with new, energy saving windows. Besides saving you money on your heating and cooling costs, they can increase your home's value and reduce ultraviolet radiation, which can damage fabrics and furniture. Plus, your neighbors will stop snickering at your home, and that incessant sucking sound will go away.

Tips for shopping

The U.S. Department of Energy offers several tips when shopping for energy saving windows.

Look for the Energy Star label: Energy Star is a program developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to set efficiency standards for various products. Energy Star products are the most energy efficient products.

Rebates: Energy-efficient upgrades often come with federal, state and local rebates. Check with your local utilities to see what might be available.

Double panes: Your energy saving windows will have at least two panes of glass and be low-e coated. You may find triple pane windows, though experts question their added value, in most cases. Climate appropriate: Windows are rated with a U-factor and a solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC). A low U number means better insulation for cold climates; a low SHGC number means less solar heat, which means less need for air conditioning in hot climates. Some climates require windows that are both U-factor and SHGC efficient. Ask window experts in your area which numbers you need.

Unit or COG: Some windows are rated for the performance of the whole window, and some are rated just for the performance of the center of the glass (COG). A COG rating is not as accurate as the whole-unit measurement.

Warranty:Some window warranties are void if professionals don't install them. So, DIYers beware.

More efficient windows are a big investment, but your home--and wallet--will thank you.
