Sinusitis - Triggers And The Signs Of A Stuffed Up Nose
A blocked up nose or sinusitis is a very annoying
, uncomfortable and increasingly common ailment. This condition is usually the result of catching a cold or flu as the body gets rid of the virus by creating mucus and discharging it through the nose, hence the reason for a runny nose. This is actually a good sign as it indicates that the immune system is in working order however, it becomes a problem if these symptoms persist long after the flu or cold has gone.
When the nose is continually blocked it becomes a chronic condition and usually sinusitis is the cause. The symptoms of sinusitis is a heavy sensation above the bridge of the nose, behind the eyes and along the side of the nose. Other symptoms include an increase in temperature and headaches. These symptoms are caused by your sinuses becoming swollen and inflamed.
Your sinuses are the tiny air filled cavities that are located behind your forehead and cheekbones. They have a very important role in regulating the temperature and moisture content of the oxygen that you breathe in to your lungs. When these cavities become inflamed and swollen they block the flow of air and the channel that releases mucus from your nose. It is this swelling that causes that uncomfortable bunged up feeling.
There are two types of sinusitis:
Acute sinusitis, develops rapidly usually as the result of the flu or common cold and can clear up within 2 to 12 weeks.
Chronic sinusitis, is when the symptoms persist longer than 12 weeks.
The most common reason for your sinuses to swell up is a bacterial infection and this can usually clear up without the need of any medication however, you can use decongestants to relieve the symptoms.
If the condition persists beyond 12 weeks then it is advisable to see your doctor. If you have chronic sinusitis then your doctor may prescribe a course of antibiotics to treat the condition.
