Six reasons to give your hairdressing salon its own makeover

If you own a hairdressing salon that's seen better days

, maybe you're due to give it the makeover it deserves and needs. Here are six reasons why you may want to consider upgrading what you have:

1) If your chairs have lost their shape or become uncomfortable, or if bits of it is starting to fall off, then it could be time to invest in new salon furniture.

2) Go outside and look into your salon window. What does it say to potential customers? Does it convey the right message about the kind of hairdressers it is or does it let you down? If it's the latter, then jot down a list of everything that's wrong with it - from the wallpaper to their flooring and everything in between.

3) Are your clients receiving the best service possible? If not, then consider where that could be improved. Have a look what products, equipment and furniture are available and think about the impact they could have on your customers. A happy customer is one who keeps returning.

4) Keeping up with the latest trends is what hairdressing is all about, but a salon that doesn't reflect that can communicate the wrong message - especially if you're trying to attract young customers. Up-to-date salon equipment, furniture and colour scheme can deliver a message that you're on the (excuse the pun) cutting edge of hairdressing. It may even inspire your existing clientele to give you greater responsibility to do something different to 'the usual'.

5) Are you making good use of your space? It's amazing how a change around in layout could free up room for more stations, a bigger and better waiting area, or even afford you the opportunity to provide a wide range of services.

6) If you've identified a new corner of the market you want to target, or there's been an increase of demand for a particular group of people, then consider how well you appeal to them. Take men, for example, if you think you could make more money by having a more unisex appeal to you salon, maybe you need different decor or furniture. Or maybe it's as simple as changing the radio station or having a few different magazines or newspapers to read while they wait.

Once you've identified areas of improvement, maybe it's time to draw up a list of the salon equipment and hairdressing furniture you might need.
