You have probably heard it a million times. Wear sunscreen. Wear a hat. Cover up. Most medical experts understand that people cannot stay out of the sun all the time. Sunshine has many benefits and in moderation can be good for the mind and the body, provided you protect yourself and not overdo it.
But skin care experts maintain that the risks of direct, long exposure to sunshine are also very real.
According to the Cancer Care organization,[S]kin cancer is the most common of all cancer types. Most skin cancers are caused by too much exposure the suns ultraviolet (UV) rays. Prevention and early detection are the best ways to keep your skin healthy. The American Academy of Dermatology reports, Your risk of getting skin cancer is real. Current estimates are that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer.
Dr. Jonathan Zizmor, M.D. a top-rated dermatologist in New York City says, It is important to know your skin. Dr. Zizmor explains that you should examine your skin each night and if you see a spot that seems to have grown, change, itch or bleed go see a professional. While it is wise with those with light-toned skin and eyes to visit a dermatologist once or twice a year, Dr. Zizmor explains that skin cancer can affect people of all skin colorations, tones, eyes and hair color.
If you see something that doesnt look right seek the help of a medical professional. The worst that can happen is you waste an hour or two and the best you save your life, says Dr. Zizmor.
When examining your skin you should look for new growths, spots, bumps or sores that do not heal normally. Dont forget hard-to-see areas of your body such as your head, the underside of your arms, the backs of your legs, and between your toes.
Use Broad Spectrum Sunscreen:
Broad spectrum means that the sunscreen protects against two types of harmful rays: UVA and UVB. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, use a broad spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or greater and make sure it is water-proof so it doesnt wash off too quickly.
Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes (and nose and calves and other parts of the body):
Remember the song you learned as a kid? Well it applies now. Make sure when applying sunscreen you do so on areas that are often missedthe nose, the ears and even near the scalp. Also, remember areas like the tops of your feet, and the back of your thighs.
Reapply Every Two Hours:
Dont think that one layer of sunscreen does the trick experts suggest reapplying sunscreen every couple of hours to keep your skin safe from too much exposure to the sun.
