Brown paper bag flooring. A stained concrete floor can look stunning and is one of the most stylish flooring looks in modern homes now days, unfortunately though, they are not very practical when it comes to installation. The faux-concrete application is an ideal solution to cover up worn or ugly vinyl flooring. As long as you seal it first, it can also be used on a subflor.
* Clean the floor exhaustively. Trisodium orthophosphate, which is often applied by painters and decorators to degrease and degloss surfaces, is ideal for this role. Then allow time to dry.
* Tear kraft or scrap paper into irregular pieces. Using scissors, first cut out the sections you will need to line up against the floor edge, cabinets, walls and surrounds. For a textured look crinkle each torn section, then proceed to smooth it out.
* Pour out a modest quantity of polyurethane onto the floor surface where you have decided to place your first piece, using your hands or a brush, start to smooth it out. Continue to lay the sections of paper overlapping them as you go, smoothing out the imperfections (with your hands) as you proceed.
* When the entire floor is covered with paper, allow time for the poly to dry. For a more dark-skinned appearance, use a clean soft rag to dab on a wood stain. For protection of your new flooring surface, apply around five extra coats of poly. Wait at last 24 hours before walking on the floor. A mop and bucket is all you should need to maintain the floor, which should last for many years.
Painted floor with a border. A painted floor with a matching border can add a dynamic feature look and can work on existing timber floors and vinyl.
* Apply painter's tapeline to the skirting board. Also clean the surface with trisodium orthophosphate then rinse thoroughly.
* Using three coats of quality primer, when dry, apply acrylic latex paint. Apply however many coats of paint as required to cover the area, then allow time to dry.
* Tape off a five-inch wide margin around the circumference of the room. When it concerns open plan spaces, simply follow the direction of the walls; the margin will assist you to tie all the rooms in together. Choose the paint color carefully so the margin area color compliments the background color.
