What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a potentially life-threatening sleep disorder characterized by repeated pauses in breathing during sleep. Breathing pauses can last anywhere from several seconds to minutes, and can happen as often as 30 times or more per hour. Ongoing disrupted breathing causes an imbalance between the carbon dioxide and oxygen levels in the bloodstream, as not enough carbon dioxide is exiting and not enough oxygen is entering the body.
What is Snoring?
It is important to remember that snoring is not always sleep apnea. Many people snore, as it is estimated that approximately 30% to 50% of the US population snore at one time or another, some significantly. Everyone has heard stories of men and women whose snoring can be heard rooms away from where they are sleeping. Snoring causing several problems, including marital discord, sleep disturbances and waking episodes sometimes caused by one's own snoring.
The most common factors that cause increased snoring are:
*Sleeping on your back
*Obesity
*Enlarged soft tissues in the throat area
*A small lower jaw
*Certain medications and alcohol consumption
*Cigarette smoke and other irritants
Sleep Easy with Oral Appliances
An oral appliance is a small acrylic device that fits over the upper and lower teeth or tongue, similar to a mouth guard. This device slightly advances the lower jaw or tongue, which moves the base of the tongue forward opening the airway. This helps to improve breathing and reduces snoring and sleep apnea. The oral appliance is individually crafted and customized for each patient by Dr. Bruce Luria in Dearborn. These appliances are comfortable and well tolerated by many patients and are easy to remove, clean and convenient for travel.
According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, oral appliance therapy is indicated as a first treatment of choice for patients with primary snoring, or mild and moderate obstructive sleep apnea. Oral appliance therapy is indicated for:
*Primary/heavy snoring
*Mild or moderate sleep apnea and certain cases of severe OSA
*Poor tolerance of nasal CPAP
*Failure of surgery
*Use during travel
*In combination with nasal CPAP
