Slim Jims - Still Viable In This Day And Age?

Perhaps the most recognizable tool that every locksmith

, including the Locksmith of Thomaston CT has in their arsenal is the "slim jim". While this is certainly a "tried and true" tool of the locksmith trade, and has even found its way into many a toolbox in the consumer market, the tool is no longer the wonderful and flawless tool that it once was. Many cars that are made today are built with preventative measures inside the car that makes it extremely difficult for a consumer to know if the slim jim will work on their vehicle, or if it might damage their car irreparably.

What many people do not realize about their car door is that inside of the door is a huge amount of wiring, electronics, and mechanisms that make everything about the door, from the automatic locks to the car windows work properly. Using a slim jim on a modern car can be problematic because it can often collide with some of these mechanisms, which can cause damage other components in the door.

In addition, beyond the mechanisms that one might think of, such as the locks and windows, many new cars even have side impact airbags that are embedded in the door, and using a slim jim can cause the air bag device to go off. If this occurred it would not only waste a very expensive airbag, but it could seriously injure the person using the slim jim.

Of course, the person looking to use the slim jim can check to see if their car has these sorts of mechanisms embedded in the door before they try using the slim jim, but the websites and other places that tend to provide this sort of information tend to be notoriously unreliable, and possibly very shady places that are made for the less savory characters that might be looking to get into a locked car that was not theirs in the first place.

Another alternative can be to look for more modern unlocking methods; however, the tools that are needed to perform this sort of unlock are extremely specialized and very hard to come by. Some tools may be made for a specific make, or even model, of car. While this makes it difficult for car thieves to steal cars, it also has the unfortunate consequence of making it harder to legitimately get into a car that has been accidentally locked.

There is a far more practical solution in the modern age though. While most or all modern unlocking tools for cars are extremely specialized, there is one person that has all of them, the local locksmith in Thomaston CT, or wherever you might be located.Locksmiths do this as a profession and can afford to invest in the proper equipment to unlock your car without damaging it. In addition, to get a locksmith out to unlock a car may be cheaper than it would be to purchase the specialized tools that one needs to perform the unlocking itself.
