What you need to do for the first time is to take a paper and a pencil. Draw a sketch of a garden for an empty area of your house. Make a plan of the location of the driveway and walkway which leads to the front door. It is important to fix the permanent things firstly.

Next, make some list of flowers, trees, and any other plants that you will place in your garden. You can pick out a small tree, such as a small palm tree. Do not plant more than one tree to avoid the crowd in your small garden. You can also add some herbs as the border of the garden area. Sometimes, people plant them in the front part of the garden to substitute the fence.

Besides, don't forget to give enough space for seating area so that you can enjoy the beauty of your garden with your family. You can add a small wood bench placed in your garden. It is suggested that you put it at the garden area which is close to the front door. You may plant some flowers surrounding the seating area. Remember to create a path from the seating area to the front door so that your steps won't damage the grass. You can use paving stones.

Speaking on plants, you can start with the tree. Make sure that you place it at the farthest area from the entryway. Also, you have to know where you should put the tree before planting it. Then, as a balance with the tree, you can plant some shrubs in the opposite side of the tree. If you put the tree on the left side, it is better for you to plant the herbs on the right side. To make it perfect, add some herbs along the pathway leading to the front door. Keep them low-growing so that they won't make your garden look crowded.
