Small Things Can Matter

Small Things Can Matter

Small Things Can Matter

A close friend of mine recently had the unfortunate situation of having to undergo chemotherapy. She was devastated and it really brought her already fragile mental state right down. Hundreds, no thousands of people have to undergo this horrific but essential treatment each and every day. Until you see it first hand, you can't comprehend how incapacitating it is.

As a close friend, I really wanted to do something to cheer her up, to make her feel as human and as positive as possible under the difficult circumstances. From our long chats after the diagnosis of cancer, I knew that one of the things she was most dreading was the loss of her hair - had always had beautiful hair, and she couldn't bare the thought of it all going. I took it upon myself to investigate the feasibility of having a wig or hairpiece made for her. It is not something I had ever had any experience in, so I was a little bit unsure as to what was involved and what the end result could be like.

I rang a local wig shop and explained what I wanted to do - the lady on the other end of the phone could not have been more sympathetic or understanding. She asked me to come in with a picture of my friend, and she would explain what they could do. The next day I arrived for my appointment - and was pleasantly amazed by the technology this little shop had. They scanned my friend's photo and overlaid dozens of different styles and colours. Eventually we hit upon a style that was exactly the same as her previous style. I knew immediately it would be what she wanted and we started the process of ordering the wig.

2 weeks later the hairpiece was ready. I knew my friend would be reluctant to have a wig, but then she hadn't seen what i had and how advanced this industry had become. I told her I was taking her out for a day to surprise location. As we arrived at the shop, I could see her demeanour fall a little bit - not what she had in mind to raise her rock bottom spirits.

However, as soon as we stepped into the shop, the staff made her feel like a princess - no one mentioned the condition she had, nor did they avoid it. They treated her as she was - a normal human being who had a need for a hairpiece.

We deliberately kept her away from a mirror while it was fitted - even before she saw the end result I could see her spirits rise as she was made to feel special. When I saw the end result, I could not believe how authentic and amazing the wig looked. No one would have known it was a hairpiece - she looked as vibrant and beautiful ever.

When we showed her the result in a mirror, she cried - from happiness. It was as if the new wig had revived her confidence and will to fight. My old friend resurfaced, and she strode out the shop the strong, happy woman I always knew here as.

To anyone else going through the experience of chemo, if you are worried about losing your hair, please don't hesitate into looking at the option of having a bespoke hairpiece made - you will be amazed by how good they are, and make you feel.
