I have seen this technologyin the CSIR Technofest 2010, showcased by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, New Delhi, at India International Trade Fair during November 14-27, 2010 New Delhi, India. I understand that "Smart Card Operated Prepaid Energy Meter" was developed by Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute, Durgapur, India.

I came to know that some developed countries have this technology to prevent the electricity theft. In India, this is the first time, I have seen this technology in India and this may reduce the electricity theft in future.

The major problem in the electricity is wastage - nearly 30% and more percentage will go as a theft from residential and industrial areas. These thefts cannot be recognized and if recognized, they cannot be punished severely. Because of many reasons like wastage, misusage, theft, etc will charge more to the real users. This technology will give technological solution for this.

User can purchase the electricity like prepaid phone card. Here user gets a card (like bank's debit card or credit card type card) for using electricity and pays some amount for this card. After the card purchase, card can be inserted into the meter to get the value of electricity. User can see the amount daily how much they used on electricity, so that he can save also.

Easy activation & card refilling through portable refiller

In built card authentication to prevent theft

In future, there is no other go, all electricity boards in all states have to use this technology to prevent the misuse, theft of electricity and benefit real user of electricity.
