History

There is actually no exact date when soap was discovered. But there was an evidence from the Babylonian clay containing soap-like substance dated about 2,800 years ago. A formula for soap consisting of water, alkali, and cassia oil was written in Babylonian clay tablet around 2200 BC. That was the earliest record of soap. Around 1550 BC, the Ebers papyrus from Egypt also shows an evidence that Ancient Egyptians bathe regularly using a combined animal and vegetable oils with alkaline salts to create a soap-like substance. The use of soap was also traced from the Roman Empire in the first century AD, as well as in Greece and middle East countries. Historically, soap was made by mixing animal fats with lye. Because of the caustic lye, this was a dangerous procedure (perhaps more dangerous than any present-day home activities) which could result in serious chemical burns or even blindness. Before commercially-produced lye was commonplace, it was produced at home for soap making from the ashes of a wood fire.

The use of soap has become universal in industrialized nations due to a better understanding of the role of hygiene in reducing the pathogenic (causing disease) microorganisms. Manufactured bar soaps first became available in the late nineteenth century, and advertising campaigns in Europe and the United States helped to increase popular awareness of the relationship between cleanliness and health. By the 1950s, soap had gained public acceptance as an instrument of personal hygiene.

How It's Made

Soap can be detergent, dish washing, facial, hand, or body soap. Their ingredients may vary depending on its usage. But basically, all the soaps are composed of fats or oils, lye, and water. In making soap, you may need a container and a ladle to mix the ingredients, a grater to grind some mixtures, molders, and a plate, preferably glass, to hasten the drying process of the mixture. Once all these supplies and equipment are complete, it is time to start the soap making process. With water in the container, lye is added carefully and mixing it continuously using the ladle until molten. Fats or oils is then added while the mixing is ongoing until the formula begins to harden. It is then poured into the molder on top of a dish. The time also varies before it is ready for use. It can take several hours to become completely solid.

They come into different shapes, colors, scents, and mixtures in line with the theme. They are also at its best presentation when put inside a box to completely perfect the fashion.
