Over 90% of Network Marketers are using social media sites such as MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter incorrectly to market. I have no clue who developed the training program that is teaching people to spam peoples walls and inboxes with advertisements promoting their opportunity, but whoever did needs to throw their computer off the nearest cliff and stick to offline marketing. I know many of you have been schooled by your upline in your primary company to incorporate a "3 foot rule" and talk to any and everybody that will listen about your business. Now that approach does yield results offline, but it's a different ball game on the internet. Adding friends on social media sites and then immediately spamming them with talk of business is counter productive! I wake up every morning to hundreds of Facebook messages and I know whether I will take the time to read the message within my first.87 seconds of opening it. As soon as it opens I skim it quickly and if I see any links leading to any other pages then I immediately delete the message and move on. And I know many others that consider their time valuable do the exact same thing. Yes we are in network marketing which is undoubtedly a selling business (whether you like it or not). But your goal on these social networking sites is to sell yourself, not your products or business. I repeat.. the only selling that should be taking place on social networking sites is selling yourself!

We all know that in network marketing the power (and money) is in the list. So when we are on these sites adding friends on a daily basis, what do you think we are doing? Building a list! Now we also know that the power isn't in the quantity of the list, but the quality of the list. So instead of spamming your list with sales pitches, concentrate on building REAL relationships with them. And I can't stress this enough, do not lead with your business! That is a horrible way to try to develop a relationship with anyone on these sites because then they feel like they are trying to be sold the whole time, and any of your attempts to get to know them comes off as fake.

I personally do not use any automated systems for my social networking sites besides Friend Blaster Pro, which helps me target what group of people I want to add on MySpace, and then it sends friend requests for me. Now the reason I don't use a automated system to try to communicate with people is because that's not quality networking. Now I don't think there is anything wrong with using automated systems in others areas of your business, It is actually important to have several systems to work for you so you can focus your own labor on your strengths. But social networking is not the place for it. Remember you can't cut corners everywhere! Automated responses are also easy to spot, and can be a turn off. There's no way someone can write a 300 word message 10 seconds after I have accepted their friend request.

How To Build A Quality Friends List

This is actually very simple, just show that you care. You will be surprised at how easy the money starts flowing when you take your focus off of it. So stop trying to make a sale or a recruit every time you log into your social networking sties. Get to know the people that request to be your friend and start conversations with your old friends that have nothing to do with business. Ask about and remember things that are important to them, you will blow their mind when you remember their daughters birthday, or their anniversary. And when you continually do that you build TRUST. Everyone we meet on the internet starts out as a cold suspect, and our goal is to turn them into a warm prospect. Once you have built trust, you have achieved the main goal of social networking sites.

tip: Instead of spending 1 hour a day to add 100 friends. Spend 20 minutes to add 30 friends. And then 40 minutes to talk and get to know those friends!

I've Built Trust, Now What?

So now you have built a rock solid relationship with your list by showing that you care and are genuinely interested in their well being. Now it's time to slip your sales pitch in their inbox right? WRONG! Doing that could possibly erase all the relationship building you did and give them the "I knew he/she was up to something" feeling. When you have built trust and you are ready to try to monetize your friends on Facebook, MySpace, or Twitter... do it nonchalantly so it doesn't seem like a sales pitch because people hate to be sold but they love to buy. So instead of posting on your wall..

"Tired of Struggling In Your MLM Opportunity... Click This Link to Learn How To Get Laser Targeted Leads... FOR FREE!"

Just head to your inbox and talk to some of your friends that you are already having conversations with or just finished talking to and send them something like.

"Hey Chris, I just wrote a new blog post! Can you do me a favor and check it out and let me know what you think?"

There you go! Now Chris is going to go to your blog and read your post and spend some time checking out your other posts and some of the videos you got. And next thing you know Chris has opted into your email list! Now you don't need a blog for this strategy to work. You could even say something along the lines of..

"Hey I just posted this new video on YouTube.... can you check it out and let me know what you think"

Next thing you know Chris is swimming through your YouTube channel looking at all your videos and seeing all of your value that you have to offer, then Chris is going to your capture page and opting into your email list!

Now that is effective social networking!

Your Success Homework:

Add 10-20 (depending on your schedule) new network marketing friends to Facebook or MySpace this week. And learn the things that matter most to them outside of business. Find out what they like to do for fun. How many kids they have, how long they've been married. Where they work (besides their MLM company), they're favorite sports team, etc... talk to them this entire week without mention your business once... and watch how you immediately separate yourself from the hundreds of other friends on their list and most importantly, gain their trust!
