Heavens. As if all matters SEO and digital marketing didn't already cover enough ground and demand enough of your undivided attention. What with keywords and anchor text, tags, link building, submissions, architecture, UI and the rest it's not as if there isn't already plenty to keep you busy. Now recent changes to the Google search algorithm have thrown a social media curve ball at SEO. Welcome to the world of Social Search.
Google is now integrating information from major social engines such as Twitter, Quora and Flickr far more prominently than ever before. After Bing's personalisation deal with Facebook though, Google's move doesn't really come as much of a surprise.
Launched in 2009 Google's Social Search is designed to deliver links recommended by friends. The new adjustments include three major changes.
Positioning: Buried at the bottom of the page these links were often overlooked. Not now though. According to the official Google blog Social Search results will now be blended throughout the page, or as Google puts it: "mixed throughout your results based on their relevance." They continue, "This means you'll start seeing more from people like co-workers and friends, with annotations below the results they've shared or created."
Appearance: Clear annotation of search results will display which of your friends recommended it and on what social platform such as Quora, Flickr and Twitter they did it through. Mashable offers the example of a friend tweeting a link to a Mashable article and your Google account is connected to Twitter. In which case you're likely to see an annotation saying that your friend "shared this on Twitter."
Control: Users now have the ability to both publicly and privately interconnect their social profiles to their Google accounts.
Without doubt this is both an interesting and inevitable step away from traditional SEO to include even more relevance signals. And after all, personal recommendation and networks play a vital role in our off line decision making. Why shouldn't that be the case on line too?
Whilst online SEO in the form of a well optimised site offering great content isn't going anywhere, what the move does show is that social media optimisation as a component of your online marketing now needs to be taken seriously.
