Solar Do It Yourself - Home Grown Green Energy

Clean, cheap and environmentally friendly power is

, without a doubt, one of the bigger sellers in the DIY industry at the moment. Souring power costs and increased environmental awareness are certainly the main contributing factors to the phenomenon with solar do it yourself projects topping the home grown green power stakes. When one considers the benefits of installing a solar system it is not hard to see why.

A basic solar system that can easily be built at home over a weekend can run a surprising number of household appliances and save a fair bit on the old power bill. With a little more commitment in terms of time and money and you could cut your bill in half or even more. The added bonus is that these savings are genuinely helping save our dwindling natural resources.

Let's see what it takes to do this. A basic DIY solar system consists of 3 or 4 parts that are readily available from solar power and hardware suppliers. The first is a solar panel that can be purchased ready built or constructed from scratch depending on how ambitious you are. The second and third components are a charge regulator and a set of batteries. These two parts work together to store the power generated by the solar panel.

The fourth is an AC converter. You will only need this one if you plan to use the DC power from the batteries to run AC appliances. The charge regulator and AC converter can also be bought complete or built up from kits. The system is surprisingly compact and doesn't take huge amounts of space to install. The panels tend to have a fairly large surface area but are flat so they can install on your roof or up against a wall without becoming a nuisance.

The systems operation is really simple. The solar panel converts solar radiation into an electrical charge through the action of its individual solar cells. This charge, 18 volts for a typical solar panel, is then fed via the charge regulator to the batteries where it is stored. The charge regulator prevents the batteries from overcharging and also stops the stored power from trickling back to the panel at night.

This stored energy can then be used to power DC appliances directly from the batteries or via the AC converter if you need to power AC appliances. The number of appliances that can be powered and the length of time the stored power will last depend on the rating of the batteries and this information is readily available from most solar power suppliers.

These systems can be installed at home as a supplemental power source or used to add a new twist to the average camping trip. A small portable solar system will take up very little space and can be used to charge cell phones or laptop batteries, power low wattage lighting or even heat water.

These systems are also surprisingly cost effective and the average basic home installation can be put together for less than $400 in total. The savings that this sort of system will represent will very quickly make up for the outlay and thereafter its all pure gravy.

If you are serious about saving some money and giving our old long suffering world a break consider a solar do it yourself project. You will not regret the decision!
