As we all notice on a frequent basis, the price of everything goes up. All the time. Without warning. Basically people just accept it. A small crowd of people might bellyache about it, but at the end of the day, we accept it. One of the things we just "accept" is the price of our utilities. You'd think with technological advances that we hear about on a daily basis that our utilities would not get so high. Whether you are a believer in the polar ice caps melting and the greenhouse affect, it is a FACT that your utilities keep going up and up. Most people work so hard at their jobs that they don't want to have to deal with it. Admit it, you're probably exhausted half the time and so are most of the people you know. We eat to work and work to eat.
I bet you just love it when it's winter and you get HUGE utility bills. Have you ever had a home heating oil bill for over $1,000? I have and it wasn't pretty. It's even worse because most of us turn the heat down in the winter so we don't run up the bill or we turn up the air conditioner because we can't afford it. Does anybody not find this unacceptable?
Now is the time to actually do something. Now is the time to take charge. Now is the time to be more self-sufficient, if even a little bit. Have you ever had the power go out for any length of time? How did that work out for you? Did you have an emergency generator for power? Did you have water? Did you have food? Could you generate heat if it was in the winter? Many of us have become so anesthetized by life running like clockwork that we do not consider the possibility of something actually going bad for any length of time. Admit it, you're spoiled.
One of the things we CAN do with minimal outlay from out pocket is to create solar module panels, or simply known as solar panels. When the technology was first invented, they were only able to elicit a 1% on the energy. Yippy skippy. Stop the presses. The difficult with having solar module panels has always been the power transfer efficiency. Now after a century of refinement, solar panels can now produce a return of more than 30% of the power they receive. The good thing about solar power is, the source will NOT dry up. The sun gives the world more energy in a day than it could use in a year.
There is no debate now. Solar module panels are a viable alternative energy source both economically and environmentally. Whether you decide to purchase them outright or build them yourself, these are not your father's solar panels.
Wouldn't it be a hoot to have the utility companies pay YOU to put electricity back into the grid?
It used to take ten to twenty years to pay for the investment of buying solar panels with the savings you would realize. Now this has been cut down to 1/4 to 1/2 of the time. In addition, rebates and tax incentives make it more affordable than ever.
In reality, you could also build these and install them for a fraction of the cost. You don't have to be mechanically inclined (although it would be helpful to know the difference between a screw driver and a wrench!) . For a fraction of the cost, and with the following tools, you could make them yourselves and install them!
Screw Driver
Multimeter to measure output power of each solar cell (Not expensive to purchase)
Jigsaw for plywood cutting to form a base for solar cells
Soldering iron
Soldering lead
Tabbing wire to connect all the solar cells
Bus wire, if you billed more than one solar panel and put them in series
Stainless steel screws
Gloves and caulk gun
Paint to protect the solar panels
Paintbrush
Wirecutters
That's really not a lot of stuff, is it? Trust me, I come from the "duct tape" school of engineering and this is not difficult to do. And you can take charge of something that prior you've been powerless to do something about. (unless you were just a hermit and decided not to use electricity) Whether you just want to power some appliances or power your whole home or just have something for backup, do something and do something now. For a few hundred dollars, you can be prepared for something that you are ill prepared for now. No electricity. Whether you want to save money, whether you want to say "take THIS power company!", whether you want to save the environment or whether you'd just like to be better prepared, this is a great solution.
