25,000 rebate customers dumped by govt

If rumours are to believed, there could be up to 25,000 properties still waiting to be installed under the old Solar Homes and Communities Plan (SHCP) rebate scheme.

With the deadline fast approaching, property owners are increasingly anxious to get their solar system installed - a situation that could spell boom time for solar installers.

The install backlog has been caused by delays processing the thousands of SHCP applications received; at its height the scheme was attracting more than 6,000 applications per week.

Customers granted pre-approval for the $8000 grant under the old scheme, are now are up against a July 6th deadline, and must have their solar install completed and signed off by that date to avoid missing out. All installations must be fully completed, including grid-connection, and an installation report must be completed and submitted within 8 weeks of install to meet the rebate criteria.

With supply problems continuing to plague the Australian solar industry and some operators unable to secure critical solar components, customers awaiting installation are anxious that delays may mean they'll miss out altogether. The Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (DEWHA), who administers the scheme, allows applicants to switch installers - provided that the new installer is accredited. This loophole means hundreds of property owners - concerned that their original solar operator will fail to deliver the goods in time - are now shopping around for a new solar installer.

Installers offering a fast and efficient install service - especially in regional locations - look set to capitalise on the SHCP install stockpile. Solar install services like Fast Fit Solar, an online service that connects homeowners and commercial property owners with accredited solar installers, are also gearing for action as the rebate deadline looms. Property owners are using sites like Fast Fit Solar to switch their install and secure their SHCP rebate. For a one off administration fee of $20 FFS will complete the necessary paperwork, list the install property on the site, and invite solar installers to place bids on the install job. Accredited solar installers are encouraged to register with the site and take advantage of newly listed SHCP installs.
