Solar Power - Not Just For the Rich

A Boulder, Colorado based company is bringing solar energy to multi-unit, low-income eligible homes in California. The company, Main Street Power Company, is a private solar development and finance firm.

The program to bring solar power to California residences is being subsidized through Solar Access California. Solar Access California is a venture of Morgan Stanley and Main Street Power Company.

Ms. Arleen Novotney is the Executive Director of the Association of California Community and Energy Services. Ms. Novotney commented that "we are excited to partner with Main Street Power and Morgan Stanley on this exciting pilot program to providefree solar energy. This solar energy project is a wonderful example of innovative public-private partnerships that deliver real benefits to low income citizens."

In addition to the no-cost solar power, there are other benefits of Solar for All California. These include job development and creation and no-cost building upgrades for owners.

Under the assembled No-Cost power purchase structure Solar Access California will be the owner as well as run the systems, while giving the clean solar energy to multi-unit, low-income, homes at no cost for 10 years. The deal worked out will have The Main Street Power Company work with the MS Solar Solutions Corp., on the public-private partnership. The partnership also includes The Association of California Community Energy Services and The Central Coast Energy Services of California.

Jonathan Postal, president of Main Street Power said that "our social mission is that solar power should be available to all people, regardless of income. It's usually only the affluent who are able to benefit from solar power. This program levels the playing field to allow low-income rental units to benefit from solar energy as well."

Ric Tan, Main Street Power's vice president added that "this program is an example of how the private sector working together with government and non-profit agencies can use private capital to leverage multiple funding programs to deliver maximum benefits to California's most needy citizens."

As part of the installation, Solar Access California is offering free solar training programs for non-profit workers. This will allow the tenants and community members to contribute and learn from thesolar installations.
