Solo Professional Success - Are You a Self Leader

Do you remember the last time you had a lousy day? Maybe a client opportunity fell through, the babysitter canceled, or a project didn't turn out as well as expected. It's the normal stuff of life and business.
When those obstacles happen, who is the leader that encourages you, gives you guidance and brings you back to a positive mental state? As a solo professional, you are the leader!
There are lots of resources out there on how to lead others, but have you thought about what it means to lead yourself? Self-leadership describes how you lead your own life - setting your course, following it, and correcting as you go. Life and business are often intertwined for you, so it also reflects how you work with clients and colleagues.
You probably have some self-leadership already in your life. After all, you did strike out on your own. But here are some core qualities of a self-leader:
Enthusiasm for learning. Almost all people I've met who are great self-leaders are learning enthusiasts. They keep up with trends in their industry, are well-read, and love to learn and share new information. I've also noticed that they usually surrounding themselves with others who are also learning enthusiasts.
Goals for life and business. Because solo professionals usually live in a combined world of the personal and professional, setting goals for business and life are critical. Self leaders take that a step further by monitoring those goals and correcting the course when needed. One idea is to create a vision board; it allows you to dream big and visualize what you want your life to be. Secondly, create a goal board - this can be a white board of your yearly goals, broken down into quarterly or monthly goals.
Willingness to let go. Self leaders have learned where to direct their time and energy, and where to delegate. This action allows you to better lead in your areas of strength. For example, you delegate some tasks to a trusted assistant and then free your mind and energy to focus on a creative project essential to your business.
Discipline. Self leaders create plans and schedules; they also stick to them. For example, discipline may mean designating blocks of time for creative work, or a scheduled time to check email and return phone calls. It could also mean shutting down at a certain time each evening, or a willingness to say no to non-essential work (or life) activities.
Focus. Focus and discipline often go together. Part of being an entrepreneur is creating lots of potential ideas; self leaders select those ideas that give them the greatest leverage in their business. This means they can narrow their focus, do their best work, and create a more profitable outcome. Compare someone who chases lots of different ideas to the person who selects one or two ideas and sees them through to completion. Who has the greater chance of fully capitalizing on their ideas?
