Some Common Misconceptions On House Alarm Systems
There are many reasons why a house owner could resist from installing a home alarm
, but the benefits absolutely outweigh the perceived downsides of an alarm. Many of reasons stopping people installing an alarm at home are myths and untruths that have been passed down along the years, now we will try and dispel a number of those myths.
An Alarm is Too Expensive
Many people think that alarm systems are simply too dear, and that as long as they lock all the doors and windows theyll be fine. But the cost of getting an alarm installed has reduced dramatically over the previous few years. You can obtain a wireless thief alarm installed for around 600, and this even comes with a 1 year warranty on installation and parts. Shop around to make sure you obtain the best deal.
In addition to the installation, a general misconception is that to have the alarm monitored 24x7 will be too expensive, but in this day and age you can pick-up deals that will provide round the clock monitoring for as little as 15 per month.
Many house owners fail to comprehend the Return on Investment (ROI) of an alarm, but it pays for itself at once by giving you peace of mind, which is priceless. If you have jewellery and other valuables worth thousands of pounds, an alarm can prevent them being stolen, which can save you a lots of money as many insurance companies have become very strict on paying out for burglaries.
My Home is Not a Target
This is a classic one from homeowners. Everyone thinks that no-one will take the trouble to steal anything from their home: wrong, a criminal will target any home he thinks he can get something from! Interviews with burglars have exposed that they are more likely to rob a home without a visible intruder alarm box outside than one without. This information alone justifies having an alarm system.
An Alarm Will Upset my Neighbours
As long as your alarm is not going off every 5 minutes, neighbours will not fuss about the occasional alarm (especially as their own alarm could also be going off!!). If your neighbour sees you having an alarm installed, it could also encourage him to rethink his strategy on home security and prompt him to get an alarm installed as well, see it as doing a service for the neighbourhood!
The Pets Will Cause False Alarms
Most contemporary home alarm systems now come with pet friendly sensors, so even if your dog or cat is running around the home, they wont set off the alarm. The sensors only detect activity above a particular height, so little moggy or doggy running around will never be detected by the sensors and therefore no alarm will be set-off.
Wireless Alarms Dont Work Properly
That could be construed as a reasonable statement in the past, but in this day and age, generally wireless alarms are perfectly fine. As long as you make sure the alarm conforms to BS6799, there wont be any problems.
And last but not least, there is the general idea that even if your alarm does go off, the police wont attend. This is right in the case of a stand-alone alarm system with a bell ringing but for all other monitored alarms, the police will attend if there is evidence of a crime being committed. If you have a lot of false alarms, the police may not bother attending, so be wary on this point.
So to summarise, many of the myths about house alarms are basically old wives tales and not true, alarm systems have come a long way since the old days and now now home is safe without one.
