Some Fun Nursing Career Facts

If you've recently earned a bachelor's degree and are researching nursing careers

, you may be wondering what "kind" of person becomes a nurse. Or, you may wonder how much you can expect to be paid as a nurse in different countries around the globe.

Below are some "fun" nurse career statistics:

A professor at Vanderbilt University, Peter Buerhaus, predicted in 2005 that the average nurse in America would be 45 years old in 2010. Many, of course, will be older than that, they'll be entering their 50s and beyond, and will be contemplating retirement in just a few years.

Which is great news for someone with a bachelor's degree in any field who is thinking of entering one of the many masters degree nursing programs that allow college graduates the opportunity to study for their RN license: there will be plenty of jobs opening up very soon as older nurses retire.

Back in 2005, the average net monthly salary for a registered nurse was $3,100 for about 33 hours of work a week. Remember, that is net, not gross.

Pursue a nursing career in Australia and WorldSalaries.org will tell you would have made a bit more than $2,600 net for 38 hours of work a week back in 2005.. Head on over to Austria, work 40 hours a week, and you would have netted just $1,600 a month. Philippine nurses, however, took home just $144 per month. (WorldSalaries.org gave no information on how many those earning their living in a nursing career in the Philippines worked in that month).

Many American nurses work exceptionally long hours and, should they complain they aren't really paid enough for their labor and their expertise, they definitely have a point. Yet they should be grateful they work in America: of the countries listed in the report, people with a nursing career here in the U.S. brought home more per month than they would have had they worked in another country.

Pursue an MSN entry level nursing degree (those bachelor's to MSN degree programs mentioned above) and chances are you'll end up working in a hospital. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in 2006 that 59 of all registered nurses worked in hospital, while eight percent worked in physician's offices, five percent each in home health or nursing care facilities. The BLS also said about 21 percent of nurses in 2006 worked part time.
