Water is obviously vital for human survival but it is quite easily taken for granted in modern homes and cities. Yet, water shortages are commonplace, even in countries as prosperous as the UK.

Importance of Saving Water

In Britain, water levels in our reservoirs can often fall perilously low and hose pipe bands and other water saving methods have had to be introduced in many parts of the country during the summer months.

Saving water is, therefore, an important part of looking after the environment as saving energy and wasting water is just as bad as wasting electricity.

There are many ways we can reduce our water consumption as water wastage is all too easy to do and often we may not realise we are doing it.

We use water in mainly three areas around the home: the bathroom, kitchen and garden. And in each of these areas it is quite possible we are wasting water and not realising it.

In the bathroom, whilst most people are aware that showers use less water than baths, other wastage is often not thought of. Excessive toilet flushing; leaving the taps running when brushing our teeth; badly fitted showers requiring higher water pressures, can all contribute to excessive water use.

In the kitchen too, water is often wasted by over filling kettles, washing machines and cooking pans; whilst in the garden, not enough people take advantage of the rainwater and still use mains supplied for watering plants and lawns.

Fortunately, there are several water-saving gadgets that can help us reduce our consumption and yet let us still enjoy all the benefits.

For the bathroom there are some really easy to fit water saving devices that connect to taps and showers. These restrict the water flow, increasing the pressure, allowing the same amount of pressure for less water. These can make a real difference in the amount of water that gets used when we wash and shower.

There are many eco kitchen gadgets that help us save water too. Eco kettles allow us to boil just enough water for a single cup whilst the taps in the kitchen can also be fitted with the water saving devices.

Water buts are inexpensive and every gardener should use one as it is possible to always have a supply of water for the garden without having to rely on the mains supply.
