Some Helpful Tips When Cleaning Your New Sprayer
In this How To series of Paint Sprayer Reviews we are going to talk about the importance
of properly cleaning your sprayer as well as some recommendations that I've picked up over the years. In this report I'll be referring to your cleaning of airless paint sprayers, not HVLP's or power painters with cup-guns. These smaller rigs have much different cleaning procedures and are a good deal simpler and faster to clean.
Your brand new airless paint sprayer looks so clean and pretty after you take it out from it's box for the very first time. Shiny and dazzling it's common to swear by all that is holy that this spray pump is going to be spotless no matter what. I'm laughing a little because this is what I used to do for years, until eventually, after time you realize it's an exercise in futility... and soon the new and shiny penny is no longer so pretty. It's difficult enough when you are the one operator of this fine paint pump... not to mention whenever you have painters spraying with it all day.
No matter how the outside of the airless rig looks, the inside of it needs to be properly cleaned if you would like it to last. An improperly cleaned machine can lead to costly repairs, down time, new parts, more labor, an undesirable spray pattern and more. None of these problems are appealing, but by making certain that your rig is cleaned out after every use will avoid a lot of of the problems.
The steps that I intend to go over are generic in nature for many spray pumps... however, with engineering and design changes every manufacturer and every sprayer is different, so please read your instruction manual and consider my advise to be supplemental at best. As I write this I'm going from memory, but I intend to point out the important items that you ought to find valuable.
Work with clean paint... Always strain your paint using either a five gallon strainer bag or even a paper throw away one. Keep your buckets and work pots clean as well. A myriad of trash, dirt and other contaminants may well be going through your rig and gun if you don't work clean.
Don't put your spray rig in the dirt... Sounds like common sense I know, nonetheless it happens all the time. Use a clean section of plywood, cardboard or a sturdy dropcloth underneath your machine at all times. Once dirt gets inside the foot of your pick-up tube it has to be taken apart and cleaned.
Have separate hoses... By keeping one set of hose for latex and another solvent based paints you eliminate the necessity to flush water and spirits into the same line just before spraying. It's also possible to keep handy another set just for clear finishes to avoid pigments discoloring a transparent finish.
Clean all filters and foot or siphon tube... When you have clear water coming out of the gun (this usually takes 3-5 gallons of water) I suggest removing all filters, the foot and/or pick-up tube, as well as the guns filter along with the tip and tip housing. Make sure you release all pressure from the lines first, and than run another couple gallons of water through it again.
Once this last step is finished and clean water or solvents are all you can see, release the pressure inside the lines again and thoroughly coil your hose and gun so it has no kinks or bends in it. These tips for cleaning are generalized, I know. Nevertheless they really are neccessary to do if you want your airless spray pump to last for several years. I hope this information has helped you... thanks for stopping by!
