Encouragement: A kind or positive word can do wonders to the morale of the workplace. Timely acknowledgement & later appreciation for a job well done is very helpful.

Rewards: Rewarding performance can help in the short-run, but employees might start misusing the reward plans and then the quantum of rewards will have to be continually raised to keep morale boosted or else it will stagnate.
