One such venture by the Japanese company Sony Corporation and the Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson on 1st October 2001 to manufacture mobile phones has become popular by the name of Sony Ericsson. The reason for this venture was to utilize Sonys consumer electronics expertise and Ericssons expertise in the communication sector to come out with top notch mobile handsets.

Though the venture went into unexpected troubles initially, it recovered quickly registering a quarterly profit for the first time in October 2003. Sony Ericssons success can be affiliated to the success of the model T610, probably because of which the venture still remains bonded. Soon after its first success, the company released the P800 which featured built in camera and other PDA features, which helped boom its sales. Soon the company stopped the production of CDMA phones and focussed on GSM technology which is till date the dominant technology in use.

Sony Ericsson is also known to have introduced the concept of an MP3 player and a high resolution camera in the phone. The K750i was a great success with a 2 megapixel cyber shot camera and the W800i was the first of the walkman phones with 30 hours music playback. The company has launched several walkman (W) series and cyber shot (K) series phones since. Despite severe competition in the mobile handsets sector, Sony Ericsson has managed to stay ahead of the rest, thanks to the advanced research of Sony Corporation in the consumer electronics field.

Sony Ericsson is the fourth largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world by the end of 2009 and has its R&D teams in Sweden, Japan, China, Germany, the USA, India and the United Kingdom. With the company launching phones like Bravia and Experia, the company plans to take a greater market share in the near future.
