When a baby or toddler is teething, it can be a miserable time for all
. However there are a few simple techniques that you can do to relive the babies pain and sadness. These tips don't have to be done all at the same time, you can do this at your own convenience.
The Signs
You should start to look for signs at the early stages of teething. Look for signs such as, the cheeks going red, they maybe experiencing a low fever, they start to become a bit irritable, or your nursing routine starts to change, or there are problems with the feeding. Look for gums that can be inflamed or a diaper rash that could be forming.
Things To Do Next
Start to cuddle, your toddler, and even nurse them more that what you have been doing. They will probably like this as they are also receiving more attention from you too. Pick your times wisely on when you should and shouldn't nurse them.
Try and massage the gums with your own fingertips, if the baby allows you to. Some babies will enjoys this as they realize it helps with the pain. You can also damp your wash cloths and then put them in the freezer. Then you can give it to your child so that they can chew on it. Find some toys for teething, and place them in the fridge or freezer.
Give your baby or toddler, some icy and cool drinks, to help soothe out the child's gums. Only do this if the child is old enough to drink other drinks, other than breast milk. You can also provide your child with comfort foods, for example applesauce or even yogurt, when they are old enough to eat foods like that.
Wash the area of the mouth of the child, with either a warm wash towel or tissue, if they happen to be drooling quite a bit. This will stop the child from having a drool rash, that sometimes is formed in the teething process. Try and find some teething tablets, that are homeopathic or even in liquid form; a lot of families find that this is helpful to prepare and help ease the child's discomfort. Alternatively you can also find some, teething gel, this can help numb the gums and the tongue. Only use this gel on occasion, and don't use this all the time. You can either get this gel off the counter, or buy a version that is more of the natural variety and ones that are made with olive oil.
The last option is to give your child acetaminophen or another type of pain reliever, this needs to be approved by the doctor or pharmacist, especially when your child is in severe pain. You should always go to the doctor, when they are experiencing a lot of pain with teething.
Teething, can be a real difficult time for some, although it represents the child growing up which can be exciting, it can also gives your baby and toddler some level of discomfort. These tips should help with the ease of pain that they maybe experiencing.
