An extension ladder otherwise known as telescopic ladder is a stretchable climbing
ladder type that can be pulled out to any extent with its finely sliding parts. It is seen that these climbing ladder types are built with even number increments such as 28, 24 or 20 feet (about 8.53, 7.32 or 6.10 meters). The retractable pull-out slides enable the extension ladder to acquire a compact shape & consume less place for storage.
The extension ladder comes under non-self-supporting climbing ladder variety that is highly popular due to its adjustable length. It has two or more telescopic sections arranged in such a manner so as to facilitate movement in brackets or guides & allow adjustment in length. It is generally designed for single person use & can be extended up to a particular length depending upon its duty rating & the number of telescopic sections present in it. The loading duty of an extension ladder may range from extra heavy duty, heavy duty & medium duty to light duty.
Since the extension ladder varies a lot in size, a proper knowledge on the height of its top support point would enable one to choose the right extension ladder. If the roof eave is present at top support point & the climber aims to reach the roof then the top of the extension ladder must be extended to minimum one to maximum of three feet above the roof eave. This climbing ladder must again be tied to the upper level one intends to reach before starting to climb up or down the ladder from the upper level. The climber must be careful enough to escape sliding of the ladder base or leaning it over sideways while getting up or down the ladder at the upper access level.
Some extension locking devices called rung locks are there in an extension ladder to help its fly or telescopic sections hold into their adjustable positions. These rung lucks are built in a wide range of designs including stationary, rope-operated, gravity & spring-action types. All extension ladders dont strictly adhere to single ladder use & in some the telescopic sections use rung locks that usually result in the dysfunction of another rung. The extension ladder without any anti-slip feet facility or other necessary criteria required for conformation with single ladder use must be supplied with a safety sign mark that prohibits for the separate use of fly section in it. According to the safety standard, the permanent attached stops must be used to keep the fly sections attached to the extension ladders base section. However these stops need some kind of forcible means to bring removal in fly section. In case climber wants to make his/her extension ladder highly versatile, he/she may select a design that allows separate use of the sections & can itself be used as a straight ladder whenever necessary.
An extension ladder should never be set up upside-down. The use of fly section at the base & bottom section & rung locks at the top of the ladder in particular make it possible. The slip-resistant feet such as spikes, spurs, safety shoes, radiused tread feet or conformable shoes must be present at the bottom of the extension ladder in order to facilitate safety. It is again denied of being used on slippery surfaces, snow or ice otherwise the chance of falling from ladder may increase.
