Something To Tell About Mantel Clocks

Mantel clocks are an attractive addition to any home

. They are very versatile and can be placed on fireplace mantels, as the name implies, or placed on tables or pedestals in any room of the house. They will faithfully announce the time with their chime pattern and will command attention with their stylish good looks.

Mantel clocks evolved from chamber clocks, which were relatively small, portable box clocks with a handle on top so that they could be carried from room to room. These spring operated clocks were a convenient improvement over large stand-up pendulum clocks and wall mounted clocks. By removing the handle atop the clock, the mantel clock became a more permanent fixture in the room and began making their appearance in France in the 1750's. French mansions and country residences had numerous fireplaces whose mantels could be decorated with a handsome clock.

Designs of the functional and attention-stealing clocks proceeded with the development of a wide variety of styles and the use of many different materials. Wooden materials and metals were the most common choices for the construction of the case of mantel clocks, but variations on these materials and other, more exotic materials can also be found. For example, adamantine, a celluloid veneer in a dark color was a popular choice in American made Seth Thomas clocks in the late 19th century. Bronze clocks with a gold finish, called ormolu, were another popular choice. Stone materials such as marble and onyx were a choice for heavy, sturdy-looking clocks. Porcelain with ornate designs and glazes gave mantel clocks a highly decorative look. Black enamel was often a popular finish, and mahogany, cherry, or rosewood veneers gave the mantel clock a rich appearance.

Mantel clock styles varied according to the artistic imagination of the clock maker. The Empire style, tall and rectangular, often with pillars, had a regal English appearance. Another example is a French Gothic style with a vaulted arch look and small, almost gargoyle-like decoration. A Steeple style mantel clock had a pointed "roof" and columns topped with sharply pointed pieces. The Westminster style mantel clock had a rounded clock face that swept elegantly down on both sides to a wide base. The Barrister style was a squarish-looking clock with a rounded top and outward flares at the 10 and 2 o'clock positions that were reminiscent of a barristers wig. Among the most ornate clocks were the porcelain clocks from Capodimonte in Italy. These mantel clocks could include horses carrying the clock face, candle holders surrounding the face, cherubs leaning against both sides of the face, or flowers adorning the face.

Since mantel clocks are attractive and functional they have become a great collector's item. However, before acquiring a mantel clock it is wise to do some research on the various styles and to shop around. Due to their popularity there are many fakes and knock-offs on the market. Shop with a reputable dealer and you are more likely to find an attractive mantel clock that will prove to be a popular addition to any home.
