Liberal House leader Manning MacDonald is sitting out the rest of today's legislature session after House Speaker Charlie Parker ejected him in a dispute over education cuts.
Parker refused Liberal Leader Stephen McNeil's request to set aside House business so MLAs could hold an emergency debate on the alarming numbers possibly 70 school closures and 4,000 job losses the Nova Scotia School Boards Association released Tuesday.
MacDonald said if Parker didn't think that matter qualified for emergency debate, he shouldn't be in the Speaker's chair.
"I've been House leader of this party for the last 10 years, and this is the worst decision that was ever made by a Speaker of this House," MacDonald charged.
"It's a homer decision, and all you've done, Mr. Speaker is try to save your job for another little while."
Parker said the decision was made, but MacDonald continued to yell his complaints.
"Enough is enough. I order you to sit down," Parker said. "I've made my decision and that's it."
But the Liberals continued, and Parker asked MacDonald four times to retract the statements.
"I'm going to ask you to leave the chamber," said Parker, finally.
Outside the chamber, MacDonald said he wondered what took Parker so long.
"It took a great deal of effort, I guess, but Mr. Parker couldn't even take control of that issue," MacDonald said.
The Grit, a 17-year MLA, said he wasn't intentionally trying to get the boot.
"I wasn't trying to get thrown out, I was trying to make a point," he said. "I was trying to get the Speaker to change his mind. What would I achieve by getting thrown out? I'd rather be in there debating."
The Dexter government told school boards in October to find close to $200 million in savings over three years. The boards' association says that would have a devastating effect on the system, citing the school closures and job losses.
Premier Darrell Dexter said in question period this morning that the boards are to look in administration for savings first.
MacDonald also tangled with Parker last month, calling on him to resign. MacDonald claims Parker isn't independent and makes decisions that favour the government.
The Liberals notifed Parker of the request for an emergency debate Tuesday. Parker said he wrestled with the decision of whether to allow it, but found the topic was debated last week, and there's another resolution on the order paper that would see the issue debated again in a reasonable time.
Today's legislature session is scheduled to wrap at 1 p.m., an earlier finish than usual to allow for the Speaker's Christmas reception at Province House this afternoon. MacDonald can return to the legislative chamber on Thursday.Wenn Sie an ugg boots sale interessiert sind, bitte besuchen unsere Website:ugg boots gnstig
