Special Care for the Elderly

Reaching senior years of often met with mixed and contrasting sentiments. On one side are people who welcome the golden years with open arms. On the other end of the spectrum are people who have anxieties about reaching old age. This is practically normal as each person sees the future differently. Regardless of how one sees the twilight of their years, one thing remains the same, the special care that they may require when they reach their senior years

Psychological and emotional

How one perceives growing older is influenced by experiences and ideas during younger years. Once at that stage, the elderly may still have the same sentiments as when they are still younger. So to consider the emotional and psychological needs of the elderly, each must be treated differently. Keeping in mind that the uniqueness of a person does not stop when they reach their senior years is a critical element in caring for their psychological and emotional needs. In fact, questions about fulfillment in life, reaching life goals, family concerns, financial worries, death and dying, sickness and disability are just some of the things that maybe going through their minds.

At this stage, they are no longer as productive or as physically active as they were before. Because of this change, the way they see themselves may be have changed. Anxieties, self pity, or even the feeling being unproductive can be demoralizing. On the other hand some seniors welcome the idea of having to relax without worries of work or making a living. Either way, an environment that will foster their psychological and emotional needs is a critical requirement. Expert and professional help will definitely be a great help so that seniors will really enjoy this stage in their lives. But nothing beats the comfort that they get from family and friends. Nothing is as stronger as psychological and emotional bonds they have worked hard on for years.

Now more than ever, they require the psychological and emotional support since this is the final stage in their lives. However, enjoying life at its fullest must never stop even when advance in age.

Physical and mental health

It is during the senior years when the physical body and the mental faculties may fail them. From mobility to mental alertness down to basic bodily functions, the life of a senior maybe full of challenges. Physical capabilities are no longer as what they had during their early years. Some may require special tools, wheelchairs, and equipment just to do even the simplest things. Because of the physical and mental limitations the activities that they can do are also limited. But this does not mean they no longer require physical and mental stimulations. In fact, it is during this later stage in life that doing even the simplest tasks can keep their bodies in shape and minds active.

Because of physical or medical limitation many seniors often retreat to their homes than go out. Of course there are many activities offered inside homes for the elderly and similar facilities but there is much to see outside. There are events and occasions that they miss out simply because of their limitations. Special services tailored for these instances are actually available so that they can continue to experience life outside the home. Non-Emergency Medical Transport (NEMT) service is the best and most appropriate solution for this. It combines the required equipment to transport the elderly as well as the medical supervision that is essential to them.

Medical needs are likewise very important at this stage. Close supervision of their basic vitals is important. Taking medications is also a big concern as it must be closely monitored. Regular check ups and physical therapy needs (if needed) must be done. Geriatric medicine is getting busier now thanks to modern science and technology. Of course many will attribute this to healthy living, proper care and faith. But the fact remains that medical advancements and equipment has made the quality of life of the elderly better through the years.

Physical and mental aging can be limiting for the seniors. But the quality of life that they deserve does not diminish with their physical and mental capacity. They require a place where their physical needs and their medical needs attended to regularly.

Social needs

Humans are essentially social beings. Not even age can stop people from sharing and communicating. Seniors require the same social interactions and social acceptance like any other person. Technology allows varied modes of communications and social interactions making the lives of the elderly more socially sound compared a few decades back. Today, technology allows communication across the globe in real time. As such keeping ties strong between family friends and the elderly is made easier and more convenient. Of course nothing beats visiting friends and family or attending family reunions and gatherings. Because keeping the connection alive with family and friends is an integral part of the senior's life, special needs transport services are available for them.

There is much to experience even outside of the home or senior care facilities. There are many events and opportunities to keep the ties strong. Thanks to new technology, equipment and transport service (e.g. NEMT Non-Emergency Medical Transportation), the elderly can continue to participate socially.

The life and care for the senior citizen is unique. It can be both difficult and frustrating for the primary care givers, the family and friends. Caring for the elderly does not have to be difficult. A little understanding and some patience can do the trick. With the innate desire to make their lives better, anyone can actually make a difference. Providing quality of life must be dealt in these three basic fronts: psychological, physical and social needs.

Caring for people in their senior years is neither difficult nor easy, it simply is a commitment.
