Special Education In India
A lot of developed countries have initiated legislations regarding integrated education
or inclusive education, but most developing countries are having issues providing segregated special education itself.
What is integrated education?
Inclusive education is a form of education in which the students who have disabilities are educated under the general settings- with a general style classroom and teachers. If necessary, they might receive some instruction in different settings as well. There are many private institutions (including colleges) that offer inclusive education for students with special needs or disabilities. However, there is no legislation on this issue. Integrated education has been given some allowance in this field, but there is a need for some action in the national level, so that the effect is felt throughout the country, as opposed to a few institutes and colleges.
The government has been trying to come up with different measures to ensure that all students receive primary, basic education. This education should not be denied to physically and mentally handicapped students, which is what necessitates integrated, or at least special education. Since the advent of globalization, the Indian education system has gone through a lot of changes. It is possible for the country to adapt to the needs of the differently abled children in the country, as many other countries have done. This will not only enhance the lives of those who are differently abled, it will also improve the countrys literacy rate and the number of skilled employees.
Institutions currently in operation
As of now, there are around 37 courses at the diploma and degree level that are aimed at special students. Most of these courses are managed by the Rehabilitation Council of India, an apex organization that has been set up to handle the education and training of those who qualify as specially- abled. So far, the country has made a lot of progress in this direction.
Challenges faced
The government has been making admirable efforts in this direction, but there is a dire need for spreading awareness about this issue. The concept of educating or training the mentally or the physically handicapped is not a renown one in the country. There are thousands of people who are not even aware of the existence of such institutions or universities. Spreading some awareness about education and training opportunities for the specially- abled will also ensure that they are treated better as children and as grown- ups. A national campaign promoting awareness about education and training for the specially-abled will certainly help the cause of all the above mentioned organizations and the government itself.
