. It is the largest collection of shows and theaters in the world.

Millions of people flock every year to the bright lights of the auditoriums there. There are forty professional theaters located in New York City.

The collection of performances has brought in an average of one billion dollars a year recently, and the amount is steadily increasing. Perhaps this is because the appreciation for the arts and theatre is increasing as the shows become more edgy and interesting.

Many actors and actresses that are known for their roles in movies made out of Hollywood are starting to join casts of productions on the stages of Broadway. If you wish to see some of your favorites perform in the flesh, research the different productions and ask around regarding who is starring in what.


New York City has had a theater presence since the late 1700's. The first theater there was built on Naussau Street and held about three hundred people.

Most of the plays performed there were written by written by Shakespeare or were popular operas of the time period. Until the late 1800's, most of the theatrical performances available in New York were just plays.

In late 1860, the first play including music and dance was introduced. These acts were performed and steadily increased for the remainder of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Along with the 1920's came an influx of plays written by some of the greatest composers and playwrights of the twentieth century. The Tony Awards were created mainly to honor achievements by actors on Broadway.

Times Square in New York City is the Heart of the Theater District. Upon arriving in this bustling and majestic area of the city, you are sure to see dozens of marquees and posters advertising the different plays that are offering performances on Broadway.

There are three different types of plays found in New York City: On Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-off Broadway. On Broadway plays are always performed in one of the forty theaters located in Times Square.

Off-Broadway and Off-off Broadway plays are performed in a collection of about 200 other theaters located around the city and Manhattan. Some of them are smaller venues, so make sure to plan ahead and get a ticket before the show is sold out.

A trip to New York City is not complete without seeing at least one show on Broadway. There are different types for everyone.

Not all performances are musicals, so if you are not a fan of these types of shows, try finding another play or comedy that better suits your style. The popular shows and musicals tend to have a higher price for tickets, but there are definitely ways that you can find deals and discount tickets.

Rush tickets are sometimes available for certain performances. These are tickets that have not been sold within a couple of hours of the performance, and you can find them by visiting the box office for the theater and asking if they sell them.

You can also visit a booth in the center of Times Square that sells seats half price to many performances. However, the tickets are only available for same day evening or next day matinee performances.

The line is also usually very long, so make sure to get there early. If you opt to go later, there may not be as great of a selection of tickets.

Once you have your tickets, be sure to arrive to the performances early. It is best to sit in the theater in anticipation for the show rather than rushing to get there.


If you do not mind paying full price and wish to have the security of knowing which shows you will see beforehand, then purchase tickets before you go. If you buy them before you leave for New York City, you will be guaranteed a seat at those you wish to see most.

Many performances will not let you in after a certain amount of time before the show starts, so give yourself enough time to make it to the theater. When in the auditorium, always be respectful of the rules and regulations.

Turn off your cell phone, refrain from talking, and hold your applause until the designated time. Attending a performance on Broadway is an experience that any visitor to New York City should not miss.
