Sports Massage: Relieve Soreness More Effectively

I am a housewife and a mother

I am a housewife and a mother. My injuries relate to children laundry, the everyday duties of taking care of a house and children. I don't have a favorite sport, and interestingly enough, I have gone for a sports massage. I have specific recurring pain, and this is the best massage I have ever had. My husband was reluctant to go for a massage, until I called it a sport massage. He couldn't get there soon enough. This was not a girly day at the spa. It was a manly thing. And he did feel much better (old baseball injury). It can treat frozen shoulders, tender elbow, and pulled hamstring, as well as many other ailments.

Massage is the manipulation of superficial layers of muscle and connective tissue, to enhance function and promote relaxation and well-being. Massage became popular in the US in the 1800's and grew in popularity until the 1930's and 40's. With the development of modern medicine, it was discounted as lesser than. It made a re-appearance in the 1960's when nurses began to use it to alleviate pain in patients. They then realized it was great to do a sports massage on the athletes. In the 1996 Summer Olympics massage was deemed a core medical service and its popularity rose once again. For many athletes a sports massage is the key to their recovery and is a part of their normal routine to help them prepare for the next game or challenge.

If you are looking to modern medicine to cure your issues, maybe you are looking in the wrong place. The art of massage dates way back, back to over 3000 years. It has been documented by the ancient Hindus, Persians and Egyptians. They all applied forms of massage for many ailments. Hippocrates even wrote papers recommending the use of rubbing and friction for joint and circulatory problems.

Massage therapists, the world over, are helping people, not only every-day people, but athletes too! A sports massage can be done before a game or after a game. It can be done during training to help the athlete perform better, train longer and have fewer injuries. They can also be done to repair injuries that may have occurred during an athletic event.

With any massage, special equipment is used for sports massage. As these therapists are self-employed, and jobs in this field are increasing.

Usually this consists table with a horseshoe shaped head support for ease of breathing while lying face-down. It has a padded surface which is easy to keep clean and remain hygienic. Mats and orthopedic pillows are also used for additional support.

Next time you feel the ache or pain of either everyday life or any sports injury, consider massage. You don't have to be an athlete to go for a sports massage, and if you are, consider one before training next time. See what it can do for you.

Head to your local spa. See what they offer. You'll probably be surprised at the variety. Take the 30 - 60 minutes to have a sports massage. I did and I'm glad.
