The island of Sri Lanka is one of the most exotic south-east Asian destinations, with so many sights and sounds, each with a distinctness of its own.

Arugam Bay: The most visited destination on the east coast, Arugam Bay comprises of beach accommodation that follows the Panama road. Surfers can have a blast here, since Arugam has the best surfing waves on the entire island between to months of April to October. However, even those who are not too much into the adventurous spirit can enjoy here with a wide range of options for seafood and partying. Even the off season here is great for those who want some peace and quiet. Besides this, tourists can view birdlife, crocodiles and elephants in the nearby areas very easily.

Ella: Although the entire Sri Lankan island has numerous breathtaking views, nature has clearly been partial with Ella. The village is located in a valley that stretches through the Ella Gap towards the plain situated 1000m below. One can also catch a view of the Great Basses lighthouse on a clear night. Tourists can also hike as much as they want in the adjoining hills, with plenty of tea plantations, temples and waterfalls.

Kandy: Many people believe that Kandy is Sri Lanka's only true 'city' going by the textbook definition, besides Colombo. However, the city has a low more to offer in terms of culture, history, along with the usual metropolitan feel that runs through its streets. Kandy was the capital of the last Sinhalese kingdom which was overtaken by the British in 1815. Much like its outskirts, Kandy is green to the core, and one can have quite a few walks without having to make too much of an effort searching for a place to soak in the beauty of nature. The town centre, which is located very close to the lake (which is itself nestled between hills) has many new and old shops, hotels for every budget, restaurants, antique and gemstone specialists. However, as night approaches, there is an unusual silence that engulfs the city. Further, although the city is known the world over for the great Kandy Esala Perahera, that is organized over a period of ten days and leads up to the Nikini poya at the end of the Esala month (July/August), there are enough activities to keep one occupied at all times of the year.

Sinharaja Forest Reserve: This portion of Sri Lanka is the last key undisturbed area of rainforest in the country of Sri Lanka. This reserve is spread over a wide ridge at the core of the wet zone. More often than not, the forest receives heavy rains that replenishes the water resources for a significant portion of south-western Sri Lanka. The reserve has an area of 18,899 hectares, and comprises of natural and modified forest-land. Once a royal reserve, some colonial records also refer to it as Rajasinghe forest.
