When you start a scrapbooking business at home, you should plan to start with a small amount of capital. You can probably get away with spending as little as 100 to 200 dollars at first.
However, if you're able to invest a little bit more it will probably be well worth it. Starting with 500 to 1000 dollars will allow you to purchase many of your supplies and embellishments wholesale. Buying your materials wholesale can save you anywhere from 20 to 75 percent off of retail prices.
Basic scrapbooking supplies that you'll have to purchase when you start a scrapbooking business at home include:
1) A good pair of paper-cutting scissors. Choose a good brand name, like Fiskars, which are designed specifically for scrapbooking.
2) Paper-edging scissors. These are scissors which have grooved, decorative blades. Paper-edging scissors come in dozens of different cutting shapes (scalloped, pinking, and other geometrical cuts). Try to purchase a set that contains at least a dozen of these.
3) Paper trimmer. This looks like a cutting board, and has a blade and cutting guide for shearing pieces of paper and cardstock. Some also come with a scoring blade, and most have measuring guides so that you can cut paper to a specific size.
4) A supply of cardstock. This is what you'll be laying out your scrapbook pages on. The most common size is 12 inches by 12 inches. White, off-white and black are usually the most popular colors with customers.
5) A supply of basic embellishments. Common scrapbooking embellishments include ribbon, brads, stickers, eyelets, chipboard cutouts, alphabet cut-outs and stickers, etc.
6)Adhesives. Basic adhesive supplies should include glue (liquid and/or sticks), double-sided tape, adhesive dots and photo corner holders.
Make sure that all of your scrapbooking supplies specify on the label " free." Products that are not " free" will cause photos to deteriorate and fade rapidly and lead to permanent damage.
Next, decide how much you'll charge. Most scrapbooking businesses charge by the page and include 2-3 photo placements per page. You should expect that a typical page layout should take between 30 and 60 minutes and charge accordingly, taking into account the cost of your supplies.
