Starting a Garden of Your Own is Great Fun

When you were a child you probably played in the dirt as often as you could

. You carved out the land, built castles, and drove matchbox cars around on the dirt. The sandbox and other patches of dirt your parents allowed you to play in may have been like another world to you, where you imagined yourself taking make believe adventures and journeys. Time is limited when we become adults and playing in the dirt becomes a thing of the past. That's why so many adults put the extra hours in to grow their garden. As gardeners, you have an excuse to play and work in the dirt however often or little you like! If planting your own garden has been on your mind, here are some things you should do if you want it to be bountiful.

Planting can be done a few different times of the year. There are some plants that thrive more if you plant them a few months before their optimal blooming time. This is partly because of the time necessary for a seed to grow into a blooming a plant. It is also because the optimal time for planting seeds is when the ground is thawed. Some plants will even do better if you plant them a few seasons before they are due to bloom. If you want to grow specific plants in your garden, make sure you learn when the optimal planting time is.

Prepare your garden by digging into the ground and loosening the soil before you plant in it. Be careful not to dig at the wrong time or you could hurt your garden instead of helping it.

Don't dig unless you have moist soil conditions. The ground should be moist enough that you can form a ball with the soil with your hands. If the ball doesn't break when you drop it, the soil is too moist. Your best tool for this job is a spade or a spading fork that you can use to turn the soil and get the air moving through it.

Don't purchase every tool in the garden shop just because they're hanging there. Start with a few basics like a garden rake, a garden spade and a good hose and then build from there. Over time, as you work with your plants, you'll figure out which tools you actually use regularly and which are only used for special projects. Don't let the garden department clerk talk you into buying a bunch of "just in case" tools. You could end up spending bunches of money on things that you don't actually need.

Believe it or not gardening is a lot of fun! Don't be afraid to admit that you like working the soil and getting dirty.

You're probably reminded of your childhood. This love of playing in the dirt is what makes so many adults so dedicated to gardens. The work that goes into gardening feels like playing!
