*** Do Not Quit Smoking! Click Here *** Time and time again you have heard warnings about cigarette smoking and its ill effects to one's health. Yet, it seems nothing deters a smoker from lighting cigarette after cigarette. Some twenty years ago, a report from the United States Surgeon General states that "Cigarette smoking is the major single cause of cancer mortality in the United States." And this remains true to this day, if not even more so. In 2008, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention stated that there are 46 million adults in the US who smoke, which is about 20.6% of all adults. Approximately one in every five American is a smoker. Of this number, 23.1% or 24.8 million are men and 18.3% or 21.2 million are women who smoke. An increase in the number of smokers in the younger age groups has also been noted in the report. People aged 25 to 44 years are more prone to cigarette smoking with 23.7% while those aged 65 and older has only 9.3% who smoke. Another area of concern is the rising numbers of middle school and high school students who smoke. There are an alarming 20% of high school students nationwide who are smokers in 2007. In a recent survey among middle school students, it showed that 9% were smoking cigarettes. Half of those who smoke are going to die of this habit and almost half a million people in the US die of tobacco related conditions every year. The truth is cigarette smoking is the top killer of Americans, killing more than the combined numbers of motor vehicle accidents, alcohol, suicide, homicide, and illegal substances. It is also accountable for at least 30% of all deaths related to cancer and nine cases of lung cancer deaths out of each ten can be attributed to smoking. These are hard numbers; there is simply no disguising the terrible truth about cigarette smoking and tobacco use. Nevertheless, it is also the most preventable cause of premature death, if only smokers heed the warning and quit before it's too late.About the Author:
