Std Testing Is Of Extreme Importance To Your Health
Sexually transmitted diseases are common in the US and around the world; however
, the type of STD Screening you should get is dependent upon the risk factors that are particular to your situation. Many people have heard the advice to get tested and to use protection whenever possible, but few know that they could be harbouring an STD without even knowing it. There are many cases where a person has had an STD without ever showing any signs or symptoms. STD Testing is of extreme importance to your health because many STD's can have severe effects such as blindness and sterility.
What Types of STD Testing do You Need?
The type of tests that you need and the frequency are dependent upon factors such as age, your sexual behaviours and other risk factors. You should be screened for Chlamydia and gonnreahea if you meet the following criteria:
1. You are a gay male who has had intercourse with men
2. If you have sex with multiple partners, or are starting a relationship with a new partner.
3. If you are sexually active woman under age 25
HIV, syphilis and hepatitis
The CDC recommends that you get at least one test for HIV if you are between the ages of 13 and 64 and you are sexually active. If you are classified as high risk, the CDC recommends that you get tested at least once per year. You should definitely consider testing if you meet the following criteria:
1. You are a gay male who has had intercourse with men
2. If you use drugs involving needles
3. If you have tested positive for any other STD's, which puts you more at risk to have others
4. If you were tested and have switched partners since your last test
Genital Herpes
This infection is a very risky and tricky viral infection, which there exists no good method of screening for. Herpes can be transmitted from person to person even when the person carrying it does not display symptoms. If you do show symptoms of the disease, you can be tested through tissue scraping or culture of blisters or early ulcers. A negative test does not, however, eliminate herpes as a result of genital ulceration. Sometimes, a blood test is used as a test for the herpes virus, but oftentimes the results are inconclusive.
HPV
The HPV virus is one that is very common. Most people who are sexually active contract this virus during some point in their lives. There is no STD testing mechanism that has been developed to test men for the virus, but women can find out if they have the virus by doing a Pap test. Most of the time, the virus lasts for a couple of years with no symptoms and goes away on its own. HPV has been linked to several cancers such as cancer of the vulva, vagina, penis and anus.
Regardless of your age or sexual habits, it is always best to get an STD Screening to see where you stand.
