Steam Cleaners - Kill Those Bugs
For some time we have known of the benefits of cleaning with steam
. We talk about the environmental factors involved and the need to be kinder to mother earth. What is often overlooked is the fact that cleaning with steam is better for us as well. There is a greater reduction in the amount of harmful bacteria that is present in our homes.
To support this idea independent studies have been performed on the effects of steam in reducing and eliminating bacterial counts on various Household surfaces.
The results of some of those tests are reflected in the table below.
The higher figure represents before steam cleaning and the lower figure represents after just 5 seconds of steam.

As you can see, microbiological counts have been reduced by over 97% in some cases. This was after only 5 seconds of exposure to the steam, it is possible that there could be a further reduction after longer exposure! Imagine the possibilities if you used steam cleaning on a regular basis.
I am certainly not an advocate of having a house that is bacteria free. It is my belief that we do need to be exposed to some small amounts of them to help us develop a healthy immune system. However, it is important to be able to keep the higher risk areas, such as our bathroom toilets and kitchens free of the harmful bacteria that can cause problems within our family.
The other major advantage to cleaning with steam is that you don't have to use harsh chemicals. This has a dual benefit to us. Firstly the long term impact on our environment will be significantly reduced by not using chemicals in our cleaning process. Secondly, our bodies will thank us for not exposing them to the vast array of chemicals in most cleaners.
For those of you, like me, who like the smell of a freshly cleaned house, it is worth looking at essential oils to add to your cleaning regime. They give that fresh, I've just been cleaned smell and are safe on yourself and your environment.
