Decks are an important part of our homes today

Therefore, they require the same maintenance and care as we give the rest of our home, whether it's a new deck install or taking care of an existing deck. Repair may consist of nothing more than pounding in protruding nails or tightening screws but is something that should be done regularly.

If you spend a lot of time on your deck, there's a larger chance of damage being done. One of the worst things that can happen to decks is water damage or dry rot. This will wreck the wood faster than anything else will, often making a simple deck repair out of the question. By inspecting your deck regularly, you can spot any problems as soon as they happen. Beams or posts that are near or in the ground are the ones most likely to be affected so inspect them regularly.

Sweeping leaves and dirt off your deck regularly will help keep it cleaner and prevent an accumulation of debris from plugging the areas between the boards. After thoroughly sweeping your deck, you may find your garden hose or a power sweeper will do an excellent job of cleaning the deck. When it's clean, it's much easier to spot any loose nails or boards, which are the things that most often require deck repair.

If you're plan is to put a sealant on the deck, you'll want it to be as clean as possible. Sealants are put on at the original deck install and when used regularly thereafter, will not only make your deck look better but will add years to its life.
