Still Getting Glutened? Why Gluten Contamination is Not Your Problem and What To Do About
Are you a Celiac whose is eating gluten-free? Or maybe your like me an IBS suffer with a wheat allergy
. Either way we in a perfect eating gluten-free should have us feeling great right? Not in my experience more times than for most Celiac's I talk too. Most are still struggling with diarrhea, low energy and just plain horrible digestion. If this sounds like you and if you think the gluten free diet is best to heal your body then this might be the most important article you will ever read.
If you want to remain a victim of gluten contamination and other digestive problems stop reading this now as I'm about to show you why eating gluten free will not get you your healthy lifestyle back. It's true that eating a gluten free diet will help your Celiac disease to some extent but if your still experiencing diarrhea, cramping, fatigue and uncontrollable weight loss like most Celiac's I've worked with it is very important for you to learn what I'm about to teach you.
A Celiac friend of mine used the very steps I'm about to tell you to stop his diarrhea and chronic fatigue symptoms in 7 days. How did he do this? Simple he stopped eating the gluten free diet after 2 years and started eating foods allowed on the specific carbohydrate diet (SCD). What if in 30 days the idea of getting gluten contamination was funny? Well I bet it will be if you learn the 4 steps I'm about to share with you.
Why Gluten Free Diet Dosn't Work
Most Celiac's think a gluten free diet is their "cure" unfortunately this is far from the truth. At the time of a Celiac diagnosis the body and especially the digestive tract are in a state of high inflammation. When the digestive tract is this inflamed it causes the immune system to attack the small digestive fingers called microvilli. These microvilli are located in the small intestine and the immune system if left unchecked will destroy them. This is a very bad scenario as these small digestive fingers are what allow us to properly breakdown and absorb complex foods like grains, starches, and sugars. If the body cannot properly breakdown the foods you are eating then there is no way to get the nutrients you need.
As the microvilli are destroyed by the immune system the digestive system stops being able to properly absorb nutrients from foods. When the body stops getting all the nutrients it needs it starts to become malnourished causing low energy and more digestive problems. But wait the story gets worse now that the food your eating is not being digested correctly and is passed through the intestines until it reaches bad bacteria that thrive on undigested foods. These pathogenic bacteria start feeding in mass quantities and quickly grow into a powerful army crowding out nearby good bacteria and releasing toxins into your body. This causes more inflammation which gives you more diarrhea and poor absorption.
Now your digestive system is in a state in which it cannot digest any complex foods even if they do not contain gluten. You are now in a horrible cycle in which bad bacteria are only growing stronger as you grow weaker from not being able to digest any foods. To fix this two things must happen. First you need to starve out the pathogenic bacteria by only eating foods that are already broken down into their simplest form so that the body absorbs the food before the bacteria can. The second step is to combat your malabsorption by eating foods that rich in vitamins and minerals and easy for the body to absorb.
How To Fix Your Digestion
The best way to make sure you get both steps right is to follow the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. By following SCD you will be eliminating all complex carbohydrates and only eating simple foods that the body can use before the bad bacteria. To get a more in-depth look at the science of how the SCD diet works I would recommend you purchase a book called "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" by Elaine Gottschall. But to just to recap if you want to stop your chronic diarrhea and low energy from Celiac Disease or wheat allergies you need to properly start the Specific Carbohydrate Diet and follow it for at least 30 days.
So let's get started if you follow the steps below you will begin your healing journey and finally get some relief from your problems:
Step 1: Choose a day to start the SCD diet, weekends work best
Step 2: On the day you chose cook all the foods you will need to start the diet
Step 3: Strictly follow the SCD intro diet for at least 3 days
Step 4: Make sure you properly transition out of the intro diet and into the full SCD diet and continue on for the next 30 days
If you follow the four steps I've outlined above you should begin seeing progress in the first week. Many Celiac's will see their diarrhea stop in days and with their energy returning soon after.
