Stop Smoking for Your Own Good

Smoking is a deleterious habit; and as the figures reveal

, in the US alone, smoking is the major cause of about 4 lakhs deaths annually. A study states that those people who are in the habit of smoking two or more packets of cigarettes daily are likely to take twice as many days leave a year than non-smokers. Approximately forty five percent of the heavy smokers aged 35 years are likely to bite the dust before reaching retirement age compared to a modest 18 percent of those who are not in the habit of smoking. Smoking poses myriad dangers to the smokers health including cancer. It is one of the main causes of tooth decay and gum diseases. As one smokes, the smoke has to pass through oesophagus, and the tar that accompanies the smoke can trigger the development of cancerous cells. As the smoke that contains hydrogen cyanide and some harmful chemicals reach the bronchi, the bronchial lining will get affected. This will result in the inflammation of the lining, and the person's susceptibility to contracting bronchitis will increase. Nicotine that gets carried in the blood causes the blood pressure to rise. The person is now at an increased risk of suffering from stroke or heart attack as cholesterol gets deposited in the arterial walls. Smoking can help in the formation of ulcers in the human intestines. It can be the reason for diarrhoea in smokers. The chemicals contained in the smoke can adversely affect the brain cells and its functioning; headache is a common feature found in smokers. The oxygen supply to brain cells in the brain will dry up and the blood vessels will shrink. This situation of narrowing of the blood vessels can lead to stroke. It is common knowledge that smoking does have an adverse effect on the lungs of the smoker. Heavy smokers are ten times more likely to contract lung cancer than non smoking people. Nicotine present in cigarette smoke makes the heart beat faster than usual and will make the blood clot faster than usual which, in turn, will increase the risk of heart attack. Despite being aware of all the inherent dangers that are part and parcel of smoking, most of these heavy smokers refuse to quit the habit. Is it that these reasons are not compelling enough for a smoker to quit the habit of smoking? One starts smoking for fun and it may become a habit for the user. In the advanced stages, the act of smoking will become an almost automatic response to the stress one feels in daily life. Nicotine can get really addictive and hard core smokers may find it difficult to quit smoking. Nevertheless, strong support and motivation coupled with the will power to stick on to the smoking cessation program will definitely yield positive results. There could be times when you will fail in the endeavour temporarily, but bounce back and stay motivated always, and you are sure to succeed in your efforts towards accomplishing the goal.
