Cancer, asthma, and life-threatening allergies are on the rise. According to the American Cancer Society, cancer is the number one cause of death for children in disease related incidences. Also, in just the past twenty years rates of asthma have doubled.

A possible cause for these spikes is that in just the last 50 years over 70,000 man-made chemicals have been created. These chemicals are being added to the foods we eat and the household cleaners we use everyday to clean our homes. The majority of these chemicals, especially the ones used in cleaning products have never been tested for their harmful long-term effects on humans. Now more and more literature is showing that the long term exposure to many of these daily household chemicals is detrimental to human health.

We often take precautions to keep household cleaning chemicals out of reach of children and pets. We exercise precaution to avoid incidences of poisoning through ingestion. We are aware that oral consumption of such chemicals can be deadly. However, what we may not have been cognizant of is that simply using the chemicals according to the directions on the label is also life threatening. This is because the chemicals are being internalized by our breath and through our skin. Many household cleaning products containing petroleum based chemicals as well as chlorine and ammonia. These chemicals are deadly if ingested, but when not ingested are also known to cause high rates of respiratory illness and headaches. Formaldehyde is one of the most prevailing toxic chemicals found in many common household cleaners. As defined in the 17th edition of Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary, formaldehyde 'is used as a preservative,' and 'has been shown to be carcinogenic in certain animals and is possibly a carcinogen in man.'

For many, it is hard to believe that there would be products available for purchase on store shelves that could actually be harmful to our health. It would be nice to think that manufacturers were not selling unsafe products to the public. Unfortunately they are and the only way for us to protect ourselves is through awareness. This awareness for many has come to light after much suffering and expensive hospital and doctor visits. Chemical sensitivity is a fact of life for many. Respiratory conditions, allergies and cancer due to chemicals can be stopped if we become knowledgeable about what may be causing such ailments and start using natural products that are safe for us and the environment.

Cleaning with household cleaning products that are natural, profits our health in many ways. Natural products are not only inexpensive and effective but they give us peace of mind for our health's sake. More and more products are being made with organic materials. As we take notice and make healthier choices the manufacturers will respond by increasing the supply of healthier natural cleaning supplies to meet the demand. Hopefully in the near future, as consumers become more knowledgeable and aware the making of toxic cleaning supplies will become a thing of the past. Start making better choices for your own health and the health of those you love.
